What is the IATF?
The Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival (IATF) is the largest independent trail running event in the DACH region and a key fixture in the international trail running calendar. Since its inception in 2016, it has grown into one of Europe’s most popular and diverse running events. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2025, the festival is expected to attract around 7,000 participants from 70 nations.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Innsbruck, this event combines urban charm with breathtaking alpine landscapes, offering a unique experience for runners of all levels.
“The Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival is more than just an event – it perfectly embodies what trail running is all about and brings people together from all over the world”, says Alexander Pittl, CEO of Laufwerkstatt and organizer of the festival.. “The combination of diverse trails, stunning scenery, and an unmatched atmosphere makes this festival an experience like no other. Once you’ve participated, you’ll always want to come back.”.
The festival offers a wide range of courses suited for both beginners and experienced trail runners. Participants run through varied landscapes, passing idyllic meadows, dense forests, and spectacular mountain trails with breathtaking alpine panoramas.
The event features different race categories: shorter distances: K7 (ideal for beginners), intermediate distances: K15, K25, K35, and K42, challenging ultratrails: K65 and K85 for ambitious runners and the ultimate challenge: K110, the longest and toughest race.
One of the festival’s standout moments is the midnight start of the K110 and K85 races, creating a thrilling and unforgettable atmosphere.
Additionally, special race formats add to the festival’s excitement, like the Vertical – A steep uphill race designed to test endurance and the K7 Night Trail – A scenic run under the stars, marking the official opening of the IATF.
“For anyone who loves the thrill and beauty of trail running, there’s no better stage than the IATF”, Pittl adds. “Each course has its own magic, and this variety is what makes the festival so special”.
The Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival is more than just a sporting event. It offers a rich supporting program that attracts both participants and visitors. Like a large expo showcasing the latest outdoor and sports products. And Food trucks serving delicious regional and international specialties.
Volunteers play a crucial role in making the event possible. Every year, over 300 volunteers assist with various tasks, from course management and bib distribution to providing refreshments at aid stations. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can register through the official website and be part of this unforgettable experience.
Registration for the Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival is available online via the official website. Spots are limited, so early registration is highly recommended.
This festival seamlessly combines sporting challenges with a unique atmosphere, making it a must-attend event for trail running enthusiasts. With its exceptional organization, diverse race formats, and the unbeatable alpine-urban flair of Innsbruck, the IATF is a true highlight in the international trail running community.
