Suitable for
Experienced ultrarunners (80–100 km) looking for a new challenge, and those for whom distances over 100 km are still too long or too steep. The trails alternate between flowy and technically demanding. Compared to the K110, this course features less total elevation gain and less high-alpine terrain.
Summary
A loop around Innsbruck, with the Nordkette always in sight as a constant landmark. Challenging trails push participants to their limits, making pacing essential – don’t burn all your energy too early. To succeed here, you’ll need to manage your resources wisely.
The K85 traditionally kicks off with a spectacular midnight start, together with the participants of the K110. The first kilometers are shared by both distances: along the Europaratsallee, past the Alpine Zoo, and up the steep Bärfallsteig to the first aid station in Kranebitten after about 13 km. From there, the route continues through Völs, where a steady climb up to Birgitz begins. But from here, things get truly demanding: the ascent through the Götznergraben up to Mutterer Alm requires everything you’ve got – 800 meters of elevation gain over 9 kilometers. The effort pays off, though – at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise. The panorama overlooking the majestic Kalkkögel and the awakening Innsbruck is an unforgettable moment.
After this impressive scene, the course plunges down into the Stubai Valley. Here, varied trails guide you to the next highlight: the Sillschlucht gorge. Technical passages, accompanied by the roar of the river and surrounded by steep rock walls, lead the way back towards Innsbruck. At this point, the routes of the K85 and K110 separate.
For K85 runners, the course now continues on diverse trails with alternating ascents and descents – always with the impressive Nordkette in view. The route passes through Aldrans and by the picturesque Herzsee before reaching the historic old town of Hall in Tirol. With over 700 years of history, this section lends the race a very special flair.
But before the finish line awaits, one last challenge must be conquered: the steep climb up to the Enzianhütte. From there, it’s downhill towards the big finale. In Innsbruck, a unique finish awaits you, accompanied by the cheers of the crowd – a moment you won’t forget anytime soon.
